Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions people ask us most. If yours is not here, just ask.
Do I need a study permit to study in Canada?
If your programme of study is longer than six months, yes. If your course is shorter than six months you may study on a regular visitor visa without a permit. You will need a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution before you can apply.
How much money do I need to show for a Canadian study permit?
You need to show that you can study in Canada without working. This usually means one year of tuition plus CAD $10,000 for living costs. The exact figure depends on your programme, your province and whether family members are coming with you.
How long does a Canadian visa application take?
Processing times depend almost entirely on where you are applying from. Study permits range from under two weeks in some countries to several months in others. We recommend applying four to six months before your programme starts.
My visa application was refused. Can I apply again?
Yes. A previous refusal does not bar you from applying again, and every ground for refusal can be addressed in a new application. Most refusals come down to the officer not being satisfied that you would leave Canada at the end of your stay. We review the refusal reasons and build the new application around them.
Can I work in Canada while I study?
Students at the post-secondary level or higher may work while studying on a valid study permit, without a separate work permit. A co-op placement that forms part of your programme does require a separate co-op work permit. Students below college or university level are not permitted to work.
Can my spouse and children come with me to Canada?
In many cases, yes. The spouse or common-law partner of a post-secondary student or of a skilled worker may apply for an open work permit, and accompanying children may apply for study permits. Each application is assessed on its own merits.
How long can I stay in Canada on a visitor visa?
Up to a maximum of 180 days. The exact period is decided by a Canada Border Services Agency officer when you arrive. If no date is written in your passport and you are not told otherwise, you may stay the full 180 days.
What is the difference between a visitor visa and a super visa?
A super visa is for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and allows a much longer stay than a standard visitor visa. In exchange, the requirements are stricter: minimum necessary income, a letter of financial support, Canadian medical insurance of at least CAD $100,000, and a medical exam.
What is an LMIA and do I need one?
A Labour Market Impact Assessment is a document a Canadian employer obtains from Service Canada showing that hiring a foreign worker will not negatively affect the Canadian labour market. If your job offer is LMIA-based, you must apply for your work permit within six months of the LMIA decision letter being issued.
What does an immigration consultant actually do for me?
We assess your eligibility, tell you honestly which programmes you qualify for, prepare and check every form and supporting document, and correspond with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada on your behalf. You receive a written engagement contract setting out every service provided and every fee to be paid.
